Brian Hanley is a philosophy graduate student at the University of Calgary. Brian's research examines causal reasoning in science and engineering, especially how engineers distinguish among and select important causal factors in order to solve complex problems. His work develops a pragmatic understanding of causal selection that analyzes how certain causes are selected for certain purposes, and why those causes serve those purposes. In addition to analyzing causal selection in scientifc reasoning, Brian also aims to use a pragmatic understanding of causal selection to analyze some traditional problems in the philosophy of causation.
